If you are one of the many homeowners that enjoys the appearance of wood flooring in your home, it is important for you to understand the steps that are needed to help wood flooring avoid some routine sources of damage. In particular, there are a couple of tips that you can easily follow that will help keep your hardwood flooring in excellent condition for many years to come.

Avoid Using Hairspray Over Your Hardwood Floors

Hairspray is a common item used in almost every household, but many people are unaware that it can cause sizable damage to wood flooring. When it dries on the floor, it will cause the wood to become cloudy. You should always use hairspray over carpet, tile or lament to avoid causing this type of damage to your floors.

If hairspray has already caused your floor to become cloudy, you may be able to repair this damage by using baking soda to neutralize the hairspray. To do this, you will need to make a thick paste of the baking soda by mixing it with water. Apply the paste to the cloudy area of the floor and leave it in place for several minutes before wiping it up. You may need to perform this treatment several times to completely restore the wood, but it is a safe option for doing this.

Refinish The Wood Floors Every Few Years

Another step that you should do to help ensure that your wood flooring stays in good shape is to apply a new finish to it every few years. The finish will both rejuvenate the appearance of the wood while also protecting it from elements such as humidity swings and sunlight exposure.

Refinishing your floors is an extremely labor intensive task because the original coating will need to be removed before the new one can be applied and your furniture will need to be moved from each room as it undergoes this process. If you are unable to physically perform this task, there are contractors that can do this for you.

Maintaining the appearance of your wood floors is an important task for keeping the interior of your home beautiful. For those that are unsure of the various steps that can be taken to protect this type of flooring, avoiding exposing the floors to hairspray and applying a new finish every few years will help your floors stay beautiful for as long as possible.
