If you are feeling torn between having too much stuff but not wanting to give any of it away, you have probably considered the idea of renting a storage unit. This is a good way to put things away until you've decided once and for all whether or not you want to keep those items. While it won't fix every problem you have when it comes to organization, it can be a great solution for many reasons. This article will give you an idea of why renting a storage unit may be necessary for your current situation.

Moving on Up

Whether your moving on up, or down, you may benefit from a storage unit in a few different ways. If you're moving into a smaller home, a storage unit will be able to hold bigger items you don't want to get rid of, but you don't have room to keep in your new place. You can also use a storage unit as a temporary holding unit for items you're not sure whether you want to part with or not.

Owning Items You Use Infrequently

If you own big ticket items like skis, kayaks, and other seasonal items, you may consider renting a storage unit to hold those items. This is especially true if you don't really have a lot of space to hold and organize those items at home. How much you have will determine what type of space to rent in order for it to be cost effective. If you have a friend that has similar items, you may want to consider splitting a rental unit and its cost.

Traveling for an Extended Period

If you've just graduated from college and have decided to take a trip around the world, or you are taking a temporary job in another country, you should consider a storage unit to hold those items until you return, especially if you have to abandon your apartment when you leave. This is also a good option if you are getting ready for an extended military leave.

A Transition Period

If your apartment lease ends in a few months, but you won't be renting your new apartment until a month or two later, you may consider a rental unit (from an outlet such as Preferred Storage) to place your big items in. Also, you may want to rent a unit if you are moving to a new state for a job, but may not be ready to buy a house in your new location. Lastly, if you're retiring and have decided to take that cross country trip, keeping your items in storage is a great way to have everything ready for you when you return home and are ready to settle in a new senior apartment.
